Project objective
With a list of 26 people, the website's first job is to show the team: who the candidates are, what they do, why they are standing. The second is to explain the programme, and the third to tell voters how to vote — online or at the polling station.
All of it had to be online quickly, so that the list could point to it from its leaflets and social media from the start of the campaign.
The challenge
- Presenting 26 candidates without turning the home page into a directory
- Giving an independent list a recognisable identity, with its own colours
- Letting the team publish news and events throughout the campaign without help
- Delivering in a few weeks, before the official campaign opened
Solutions implemented
A theme designed for campaigns
Rather than bending a magazine theme, we designed a Ghost theme dedicated to political campaigns. Its building blocks are the ones a list needs:
- a full-screen hero with the team photo, the list's tagline and two configurable buttons;
- a candidate grid with round portraits, fed automatically by every post carrying the "candidates" tag;
- news cards for the rest of the campaign;
- a sticky, translucent header, and a dark mode that follows the visitor's settings.
The theme was put in the list's colours — deep blue and green — and its options are set from the Ghost admin: which tag feeds the team grid, which sections show on the home page, button labels and links.
26 candidates, one profile each
Each candidate is a post with a cut-out portrait, their place on the list and a biography. The home page shows the head of the list and the first names on the list, with a "See all" link to the full team. Adding or reordering a candidate means editing a post — nothing more.
The pages a voter looks for
The navigation goes straight to the point: Who we are, Our candidates, Our projects, How to vote, News. The manifesto is split into themed articles — education, future generations, an administration that adapts — that can be shared one by one.
Newsletter and events
Visitors subscribe from the header or from the bottom of the home page. The team announces its meetings — such as a "Meet the list" evening with the candidates — and writes to its subscribers from Ghost directly.
A step-by-step approach
1️⃣ Set-up of the Ghost site, locale, time zone and the list's colours.
2️⃣ Loading the 26 candidates: portraits cut out, profiles written, everything tagged to feed the team grid.
3️⃣ Core pages: Who we are, Our proposals, How to vote, Contact.
4️⃣ Campaign theme developed and deployed, with the hero on the team photo.
5️⃣ During the campaign: news, programme articles and event invitations published by the team.
Results
The list had a campaign site that puts its 26 candidates front and centre, explains how to vote, and that the team ran on its own until polling day. The campaign theme built for it is now part of our toolkit: the next list we work with starts from a tested base instead of a blank page.
Conclusion
A campaign site for a large list is above all a matter of structure: one candidate equals one post, one tag feeds the team grid, and the home page sorts itself out. That simplicity is what lets volunteers keep the site alive during a campaign.
